Abstract
|
|
|
Hereditary elliptocytosis, the presence of oval or elliptical erythrocytes in the
peripheral blood, affects 0.02¡0.05% of the general population and it is very rare in
Orientals. This abnormality is transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait and
approximately 12 per cent of the cased show some signs of increased hemolysis.
Peripheral blood smear of a 63-year-old female patient with myelodysplastic syndrome
contained 79.2% elliptocytes and rod-shaped red cells of all erythrocytes and examination
of the blood in her family revealed a high percentage of elliptocytes in three out of her
four offsprings.
This is the first report of hereditary elliptocytosis with myelodysplastic syndrome in a
Korean family.
